Inside and Outside of the post-Soviet Russianness in Germany

Over the 1990s and early 2000s, Germany received large numbers of Russian-speaking immigrants – over 2,7 million ethnic Germans (Aussiedler) and over 220,000 Jewish “special contingent refugees”. This essay explores the issues of self-identity as experienced by the newcomers from the former Soviet Union, their relations with German mainstream culture and society, and the reflections of these relations in the German and Russian-language press. The essay also reflects on the evolving meanings of geopolitical and social boundaries for the former Soviet citizens now living in Europe.

С начала 1990-х годов в Германию переселилось около трех миллионов бывших советских граждан: 2,7 миллиона этнических немцев и более 220,000 евреев. Автор эссе размышляет о некоторых аспектах их идентичности, отношениях между русскоязычными иммигрантами и немецким большинством и об эволюции географических и символических границ между Востоком и Западом. Во второй части эссе подробно описаны отражения этих отношений, взаимных стереотипов и образов в прессе – как немецкой, так и русскоязычной.

מהלך שנות ה - 90 של המאה שעברה ושנות ה - 2000 המוקדמות, קלטה גרמניה מספר גדול של מהגרים דוברי רוסית - מעל 2.7 מיליון גרמנים אתניים וכ- 220.000 יהודים. המאמר מתחקה אחר זהותם העצמית של המהגרים החדשים מברה''מ לשעבר, יחסיהם עם הזרם השולט בתרבות ובחברה הגרמנית, והשתקפותם של יחסים אלה בעיתונות בשפה הרוסית והגרמנית. המאמר מתייחס גם לשינויים במשמעות של הגבולות הגיאופוליטיים והחברתיים עבור אזרחי ברה"מ לשעבר החיים כיום באירופה.

Tsypylma Darieva
Tsypylma Darieva was born in 1968 in Ulan-Ude (Buriatia, Siberia) and graduated from the Department for Oriental Studies (Turcology and History) at the Leningrad State University. She studied Social Anthropology at the Free University in Berlin between 1993-1995 and received her PhD in Anthropology at the Humboldt University in Berlin in 2002. She conducted field work in Germany, UK and Kazakhstan, was a postdoctoral research fellow at the Max Planck Institute for Social Anthropology (Halle, Germany) and currently is a researcher and lecturer at the Department for European Ethnology in Humboldt University in Berlin. She is completing her new project on diasporic homecoming and memory among Armenians.
