The Limits of Innovation: On Boundaries in the Haredi Yeshiva and Theorization in Cultural Anthropology
This project, based on a year-long field study in a Haredi yeshiva in Jerusalem, addresses the significance of the concept of hiddush (an original, innovative interpretation of a Torah text, pl. hiddushim) especially with regard to the study of the Babylonian Talmud. From my studies of hiddush in the yeshiva learning experience, I draw conclusions regarding study-processes in the broad sense, including the way sociological and anthropological theories are formulated.
