The Ministry of Education encourages Israeli students to visit sites of historic Jewish communities in Poland and the sites of Nazi death camps. The trip is designed to reinforce the youngsters’ sense of belonging to the Jewish people, their connection to and identification with Jewish heritage and history, and their commitment to the future of Jewish life in Israel and its sovereignty. This study explores the impact of trips to Poland, organized by Tachlit Center, on Israeli and overseas university students. The vast majority of participants confirm that the trip emphasizes the important role of the Holocaust memory and commemoration. Findings on the impact of Holocaust education on other Israeli and Jewish values (e.g., the significance of immigration to Israel and ties to the Jewish Diaspora) are discussed, along with the implications for future Holocaust education programs.

שואה, זהות יהודית, והקשר ליהדות התפוצות

החברה הישראלית, בניגוד לדעה הרווחת, אינה מתפלגת באופן חד לדתיים וחילונים. חברה זו מורכבת מרצף של זהויות כאשר מרבית היהודים נמצאים בטווח שבין חילוניות ודתיות. קבוצה זו רואה בחיוב את חיזוק הקשר אל המסורת והזהות היהודית, למרות הקיטוב והמחלוקות. אחד מהפרויקטים החשובים בהקשר זה הוא ארגון משלחות הנוער לפולין במסגרת מערכת החינוך. משלחות אלה נועדו להתגבר על המשבר הערכי ולחזק את הקשר עם התפוצות. למרות המטרות המוצהרות של המסע, מחקר מקיף שנערך על משתתפיו מעיד על חוסר שינוי משמעותי במובן הנ"ל. לאור ממצאי מחקר זה, שנעשה בקרב תלמידי תיכון, מטרתנו במחקר הנוכחי - לבחון את תרומתו של המסע לפולין לחיזוק הזהות היהודית והיחס לתפוצות במוסדות להשכלה גבוהה – במסגרת "מרכז תכלית לחינוך יהודי". ייחודו של הפרויקט הוא בקשר שהוא מציב בין זהות יהודית, יהדות התפוצות וזיכרון השואה. מחקריינו בחן את תרומתו של המסע (בהשתתפות סטודנטים יהודיים מישראל ומתפוצות) על זהותם היהודית ועל הקשר בין ישראל ליהדות העולם.

Nitza Davidovitch
Nitza Davidovitch is Chair of the Department of Academic Development and Assessment and a Lecturer in Education at Ariel University Center of Samaria. She was born in Israel and received her Ph.D. in Education from Bar Ilan University.
Her areas of interest are higher education, the Holocaust and Jewish identity, the cultural history of Jewish sects, and moral education.
Prof. Dan Soen
Prof. Dan Soen has been teaching in higher education institutions in Israel, New Zealand, the USA and South Africa since 1961. He has published over 125 articles in scientific journals, has edited and written over 30 books on topics related to sociology, regional and urban issues, behavioral sciences, and, more recently, Holocaust memory and education. He was instrumental in the establishment of several colleges in Israel and headed social sciences departments in Israeli universities and research institutions along the years. He is the founder and editor of the journal Social Issues in Israel and sits on the board of several other scientific journals.
