How Hassidic Women Cope with the Custom of Head Shaving and Wearing a Black Kerchief

Religious women’s modesty norms are often perceived as patriarchal oppression aimed at governing women’s bodies. Current study challenges this perspective, offering a deeper, multi-dimensional picture of Haredi women’s lived experiences and body practices. Focusing on the notion of modesty among the women from the extreme ultra-Orthodox group Toldot Aharon, the article explores how they experience the harsh custom – shaving off their hair upon marriage and covering their heads with black kerchiefs. The findings exemplify a variety of women’s voices, ranging from viewing these practices as desirable and empowering to the opposite view that they damage one's attractiveness and are quite painful.

הדרישה לגילוח שְׂער-הראש וכיסויו במטפחת שחורה בקרב נשים חסידיות

נורמות צניעות של נשים נתפסות בקרב רבים מן החברה המערבית המודרנית כאמצעי לשליטה על נשים ועל גופן וכביטוי לדיכוי פטריארכאלי. המאמר הנוכחי בחר לאתגר תפיסות אלה ולהציג תמונה עמוקה יותר ורב-קולית, המלמדת כי המציאות בעולמן של נשים בנוגע לסוגיית הצניעות הינה מורכבת הרבה יותר.
המאמר דן באספקטים שונים של צניעות בקרב נשים מאחת הקבוצות החסידיות הקיצוניות ביותר – קבוצת "תולדות אהרן", תוך התמקדות בתפיסותיהן של נשות הקבוצה ביחס לאחת מנורמות הצניעות המחמירות ביותר: הדרישה לגילוח שער ראשה של האשה עם נישואיה, ולחבישת מטפחת שחורה.
ממצאי המחקר חושפים את המנגנונים השונים שנשות הקבוצה מפתחות לעצמן, ברובד האישי וברובד הקולקטיבי, בהתמודדות עם הדרישה לגילוח הראש. באמצעות המנגנונים הללו "הופכות" הנשים את הגילוח לפרקטיקה חיובית ורצויה, שאינה רק מבטאת את השינוי הנכסף במעמדן האישי אלא יש בה גם להחמיא להופעתן החיצונית. עוד נמצא כי הנשים רואות בגילוח ביטוי לדרגת דתיות נעלה ולהעצמה אישית וכקבוצתית. וכך, חרף הקשיים הכרוכים בגילוח, מרבית נשות הקבוצה מקבלות על עצמן, ללא עוררין, להקפיד ולגלח את שער ראשן עם נישואיהן. רק מיעוט דיווחו על הקושי הכרוך בתהליך, ועל איזשהו קול פנימי שהביע ספקות, חוסר ביטחון או אפילו התנגדות.

Sima Zalcberg holds a Ph.D. from the Department of Sociology and Anthropology, Bar-Ilan University, and an M.Sc. from the Faculty of Industrial and Management Engineering at the Technion, Haifa. She has been a researcher of social and policy issues at the Brookdale Institute in Jerusalem for more than a decade. In recent years she has been writing and teaching on issues related to gender, religion and ultra-Orthodox and modern-Orthodox society in Israel. Her most recent article, "Channels of Information about Menstruation and Sexuality among Hasidic Adolescent Girls", was published in Nashim: A Journal of Jewish Women's Studies & Gender Issues, 17, 60-88. Dr. Zalcberg lives in Jerusalem.
