Dress and Appearance among Women in Israel’s National Religious Community

Women and girls of Israel’s national religious (Modern Orthodox) community, who are located at the crossroads of tradition and modernity, must balance their religion’s strictures with today’s fashions. The religious world demands that they dress modestly and demurely—in clothing that conceals their sexuality and feminine contours thus keeping men’s desire in check. Western culture, on the other hand, encourages them to be unashamed of their bodies and choose clothes that accentuate their figures and show their skin. To explain how they style their personal appearance, we have mapped and analyzed the characteristics of their dress. Our visual anthropology database includes 2,000 photographs taken in locations where the subgroups within the national religious population congregate, mainly in Jerusalem. Our study shows that the uniform dress code that for years characterized this community has dissolved. The dress, hair style, and other elements of external appearance are manifestations of a dialog taking place between the national religious community and the rest of the Israeli public, as well as in-group negotiations of identity and boundaries. This discourse is indicative of the dynamic state of the national religious community, in which there are many ideas, currents and identities without a central consolidated set of rules.

לבוש והופעה חיצונית של נשים במגזר הדתי-לאומי

הנשים והבנות מן הציבור הדתי לאומי, בהיותן ממוקמות בצומת של מסורת מצד אחד, ומודרנה מצד שני, נחשפות לתביעה כפולה, הבאה מעולמן הדתי ומהעולם המערבי גם יחד: העולם הדתי דורש מהן להיות צנועות וחסודות, קרי, ללבוש בגדים שאינם מבליטים את מיניותן ואת קווי המתאר הנשי של גופן, ואין בהם לעורר את יצריהם של הגברים בסביבתן; ואילו העולם המערבי דורש מהן להיות גלויות, חשופות ומושכות. לבושן מבטא, אם כן, את האופן בו הן מתמודדות עם המתח הכרוך בהליכה על החבל הדק שבין שני העולמות הללו. כדי להבין את אופן התמודדותן של נשות הציבור הדתי לאומי עם מתח זה, קרי, את התנהגותן בפועל ביחס להופעתן החיצונית, ערכנו מיפוי וניתוח של מאפייני הלבוש. נעזרנו באלפי צילומים באתרים שונים ברחבי הארץ, המייצגים תת-זרמים במגזר. מהמחקר עולה כי כי הקו המרכזי המאפיין את הלבוש וההופעה החיצונית של כלל נשות המגזר הדתי הלאומי היום, הוא יותר מכל העדר קו, העדר אחידות. הציבור הדתי לאומי כיום אינו מהווה מקשה אחת, אלא הוא מורכב ממגוון של קבוצות וזרמים הנבדלים זה מזה בתפיסותיהם ביחס למודרנה, להשכלה, למדינת ישראל ולארץ ישראל; ביחס לדת, לממסד הדתי, לממסד הרבני, למקומו ותפקידו של הרב; ביחס לנשים ולמקומן בחברה, ועוד. מן ההבדלים בתפיסות בתחומים אלה נגזרים הבדלים לגבי מידת ההקפדה על גדרי הצניעות ולגבי נורמות הלבוש בכללן. ריבוי האופנות, כמו גם מקורות ההשראה לסגנונות הלבוש, מצד אחד, והניסיון למזג מגוון של סגנונות יחד, שרכיביהם לעיתים, סותרים לכאורה זה את זה, מן הצד האחר, מרמז על העדר זהות ועל חיפושי דרך. על אף שניתן למפות את סגנונות הלבוש בציבור הדתי לאומי, בהתאם לזהות דתית, חברתית, פוליטית ואידיאולוגית, לא ניתן לעשות זאת בצורה חד משמעית, והקושי הכרוך במלאכה הולך וגובר בשנים האחרונות. עובדה זו היא פועל יוצא של העדר גבולות ברורים בלבוש, הנמצאים בזיקה ישירה לטשטוש ולעמעום הגבולות המאפיינים את המחנה הדתי לאומי בכללו. לסיכום, הופעתן החיצונית של נשים במגזר הדתי-לאומי מהווה ביטוי לשיח המתקיים בין אנשי המגזר לבין עצמם ובינם לבין החברה הכללית, ולמשא ומתן שהם מנהלים עם עצמם ועם סביבתם. שיח זה מצביע על המשבר הפוקד את המחנה הדתי לאומי ועל היותו מצוי בעידן כאוטי, של ריבוי אידיאות, תת זרמים וזהויות, ונעדר קו מרכזי מוביל ומגובש.

Sima Zalcberg
Sima Zalcberg holds a Ph.D. from the Department of Sociology and Anthropology, Bar-Ilan University, and an M.Sc. from the Faculty of Industrial and Management Engineering at the Technion, Haifa. She has been a researcher of social and policy issues at the Brookdale Institute in Jerusalem for more than a decade. In recent years she has been writing and teaching on issues related to gender, religion and ultra-Orthodox and modern-Orthodox society in Israel. Her most recent article, "Channels of Information about Menstruation and Sexuality among Hasidic Adolescent Girls", was published in Nashim: A Journal of Jewish Women's Studies & Gender Issues, 17, 60-88. Dr. Zalcberg lives in Jerusalem.
Oz Almog
Oz Almog is Professor of Sociology and History at the Land of Israel Studies Department, University of Haifa.
