Premarital Rituals among Jews of the Caucasus

This article discusses rites of passage in three social settings: in the traditional Jewish community in the Caucasus, in the same community that underwent modernization processes during Soviet times, and in the community of immigrants from the Caucasus to Israel since the 1970's. The article concludes that many changes took place in the ritual system of the Caucasian Jewish community, but its basic characteristics have been preserved to a great extent. A liminal combination of "both here and there" has been created, which enables it to express its different identities and to preserve its unique culture as a minority both in the Caucasus and in Israel.

טקס מעבר בקהילת מעבר: טקסי קדם נישואין בקרב יהודי קווקז

המאמר דן בטקסי מעבר בשלושה מצבים חברתיים: בקהילה היהודית המסורתית בקווקז, בקהילה שעברה תהליכי מודרניזציה בקווקז בעיקר משנות ה-70 של המאה ה-20, ובקהילת עולי קווקז בישראל משנות ה-70. המאמר מסיק, כי במערכת הטקסית של קהילת המעבר הקווקזית חלו שינויים, אך מתכונתה הבסיסית השתמרה במידה רבה. נוצר בה שילוב לימינלי של "גם כאן וגם שם", המאפשר לה לבטא את זהויותיה השונות, ולשמר כמיעוט את תרבותה הייחודית, הן בקווקז והן בישראל.

Rachel Sharaby is senior lecturer in the Sociology Department, Ashkelon Academic College, and the Interdisciplinary Social Sciences Department, Bar-Ilan University, Israel. Her fields of research include: immigration, women from traditional communities, intercultural encounters and syncretism. She has written two books: The Sephardic Community in Jerusalem at the end of the Ottoman Period (1989) (2nd edition 2001) and Syncretism and Adjustment: Encounter between a Traditional Community and a Socialist Society (2002), as well as articles in academic journals.
