Russian-Jewish Americans and American Jewry : Encounter, Identity, and Integration

This paper discusses the process and dynamics of integration of Russian-American Jewish immigrants into American society and into the broader American Jewish community. In search of their distinct and multi-faceted identity, Russian Jews in America encounter numerous well-organized and established American Jewish groups and institutions with their own identity quest. On the one hand, Russian Jews integrate and cooperate with their American counterparts; on the other hand, the barriers of misunderstanding and mistrust still exist on institutional, community, and personal levels. The paper describes Russian-American Jews as a social immigrant group, mostly in New York, in terms of their socio-economic status, ideological and political views, religion, and social engagement. The data used was obtained and interpreted by the author as principal investigator of the Research Institute for New Americans (RINA) in its 1998-2004 studies sponsored by the American Jewish Committee.

Начав с краткого очерка истории русско-еврейской эмиграции в США, автор описывает разные аспекты социально-экономической мобильности и политические ориентации русскоязычных американцев. В статье также обсуждаются проблемы самоидентификации бывших советских евреев и их сложные отношения с еврейскими организациями США, которые способствовали их переселению в Америку. Местные формы общинной жизни весьма разнообразны, но все они в той или иной степени основаны на иудаизме и соблюдении еврейских традиций, от которых большинство советских евреев были далеки и не заинтересованы к ним возвращаться. Автор описывает отношения между бывшими советскими евреями и американскими общинами как «отчужденное участие» - компромиссная форма сосуществования, позволяющая нерелигиозным иммигрантам пользоваться благами принадлежности к одной из наиболее благополучных этно-религиозных общин Америки, в то же время не отказываясь от своих прежних понятий и образа жизни.

יהודים רוסים באמריקה והיהדות האמריקאית: מפגש, זהות, והשתלבות

המאמר דן בתהליכי השתלבותם של המהגרים היהודים-רוסים בתוך החברה האמריקאית בכלל ובתוך הקהילה היהודית האמריקאית בפרט. בחיפושם אחר זהותם הנפרדת ורבת-הפנים, נתקלים היהודים הרוסים באמריקה בקבוצות יהודיות מאורגנות ומבוססות היטב, שנמצאות במסע זהות משל עצמן. מצד אחד, היהודים הרוסים משתפים פעולה עם עמיתיהם האמריקאים, מצד שני, קיימים ביניהם, עדיין, מחסומים של אי-הבנה וחשדנות ברמה המוסדית, הקהילתית והאישית. המאמר מתאר את היהודים הרוסים באמריקה, בעיקר בניו-יורק, כקבוצת מהגרים במושגים של סטאטוס סוציו-אקונומי, השקפות אידיאולוגיות ופוליטיות, דת ומעורבות חברתית.

Sam Kliger
In the Soviet Union, Sam Kliger was a “refusnik” for many years and immigrated to the U.S.A from Moscow in 1990. As Director of Russian and FSU Affairs at the American Jewish Committee, he has worked for many years to assist Soviet immigrants integrate into American culture and society. Sam Kliger is the founder and Chairman of the Board of the Research Institute for New Americans (RINA) – a research and think tank for Russian-speaking community in America. He served as principal investigator in a number of surveys on Russian Jewish community. Sam Kliger received his Ph.D. degree in sociology in Moscow and published his research on Russian immigrants in America in both academic and popular sources.
