    Biography

    Dr. Yaniv Ron-El is a sociologist. His research areas span historical sociology, political sociology and social movements, economic sociology, and sociology of law, as well as sociology of consumers and consumption. His recent research projects have examined social movements that combine political and economic aspects in their goals for social change. His doctoral dissertation studied the American consumer movement in its heyday, the 1960s-70s, looking into the success of consumer activists and advocates to mobilize and build collective identity on the basis of the “consumer” category, which is usually perceived as individualized and individualizing. In his current research, he studies the Israeli protest movement of “the gas fight” that managed to achieve mass mobilization to protest against the arrangements of natural gas production in Israel.

    Ron-El completed his Ph.D. at the University of Chicago (2022). Prior to his post-doctoral fellowship at Bar-Ilan University, he was a post-doctoral fellow at the Safra Center for Ethics at Tel-Aviv University. He also holds a Bachelor of Law degree and is trained as a lawyer. He is a co-chair of the Consumption and Culture Section at the Israeli Sociological Society, and the editor of the Book Section at the journal “Israeli Sociology” published by TAU.
